Society Of Shoes Fitters
We are proud members of the Society of Shoefitters, which is a 'not-for-profit' organisation, founded in 1959. Membership for the Society of Shoefitters is through qualification only. It is a personal membership and not a corporate membership. The Society of Shoesfitters is supported by selective companies known as Associate Members who share their aims and objectives:
- To assist members of the public who have problems related to shoe fitting, foot care, shoe buying etc.
- To train people working within the shoe industry and related industries about how to fit shoes correctly.
- To inform and disseminate information regarding foot health and footwear.
We are made up of Shoe Fitters, Chiropodists, Podiatrists, Company Representatives and Agents, Technicians and Laboratory staff connected to footwear i.e. Inchcape.
A FITTING GAUGE IS MERELY A GUIDE TO A QUALIFIED FITTER
A 'Fitting Gauge' (not shoe measure or foot measure) plays only a small role in the selection of the correct shoe and ascertaining the necessary fitting properties. It is the expertise of the Shoe Fitter which determines these factors. Gauges are calibrated to manufacturers last's and relate to their specific brand - which is why you may receive conflicting measurements - because one brand varies from another. A child may take a size four in one brand and a half size larger in another, or perhaps a different width fitting! Country of origin, manufacturing technique, brand, style etc. all play a part in how a shoe fits and not what size it says on the box!
